Established Tree CareWhen building or buying a newly constructed home, there are some things to consider with regard to the existing trees on the site. How much of the soil around the tree's root system was compacted, Were the roots severed, Where did the leftover soil from the foundation go, Did they backfill around the tree's roots.
Trees with these types of problems are damaged and stressed. Consider the following steps:
Soil compaction: Keep construction equipment clear by a 1-foot radius per inch of trunk diameter.Severed roots: Don't cut the roots! If 33% of a tree's roots are cut, the tree's chance of survival is only 66%.Backfill: Back-filled dirt should be removed. Dirt should not be placed over a tree's root system because it suffocates the tree's oxygen and nutrient uptake.
